For Jerusalem Design Week 2019, HQ Architects created 90 Degrees — a large-scale installation at the historic Hansen House that reorients the building both physically and symbolically, responding to the curatorial theme, EAST.
Hansen House, a former leprosy hospital turned cultural center, is a preserved landmark with limited ability to change. The installation addresses the building’s dominant south–north orientation and proposes a spatial shift — one that alters movement and invites visitors to face east. Constructed from a diagonal scaffolding system, the installation climbs from ground to rooftop, gently wrapping and penetrating the building without altering its structure. At its peak — 14 meters above ground — the scaffolding creates an elevated platform that links past and present, offering new vantage points and an alternate circulation path through the exhibitions. 90 Degrees is both a functional structure and a conceptual gesture — reframing the building, suggesting new movement sequences, and engaging themes of history, orientation, and transformation.
